Jury Duty

Jury service is an essential civic duty and is required by Florida law for most Floridians with a valid driver license. Jury summons are issued for two types of service – petit jury and grand jury.

Jurors are selected at random from a database provided to the Clerk’s Office by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and are commonly summoned three (3) weeks before jury duty. Jury selection is generally scheduled for Monday mornings, or as otherwise ordered by the Court.

If you are unable to serve, you can request an excusal or deferment.

To serve on a jury in Lake County, a juror must be at least 18 years of age, a U.S. citizen, a legal resident of Florida and Lake County, and possess a driver license or identification card issued by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Persons without a driver license or identification card can ask to be included in the random selection process by contacting the Jury & Evidence Division at (352) 742-4160.

Before reporting to jury duty, you are advised to check whether you must report, as sometimes the court needs less jurors than the number of jurors summoned. When checking on whether you must report, have your jury summons available because both the website and the phone message will refer to your group number that is listed below your PIN on the left side of the front of the summons. Please either call the automated jury line at (352) 742-4162, or go online to check on the reporting status for your group.

If your group number is instructed to report for jury duty, you must report to the Jury Assembly Room located in the Lake County Courthouse, East Wing, First Floor, 550 W. Main St., Tavares.

Failure to report as directed may subject you to a $100 fine, and you may be found in contempt of court.
